Please understand, I am not above social media showing off. I’ve been smugly Instagramming my dinner parties and taking sneaky pictures at private members clubs for years. I love romanticising my own life. I just didn’t realise that you were supposed to do it for your kid’s birthday party. But I was wrong. Your kid’s birthday party is actually the official calling card for your Family Brand and as such, you’ve got to get it right – something that Meghan and Harry must be abjectly aware of.
I can pretty much guess how Archie’s party will go. It’ll be pared back. A small, tasteful, family affair really hammering home a disdain for luxury . They’ll probably opt for a small, but agonisingly tasteful, mostly vegan picnic in the gardens of their California home. Organic snacks juxtaposed with something down-to-earth, like cheese strings. Invite some kids of local normies, playing nicely with Serena Williams’s daughter.
But the whole point of Meghan and Harry is that they’re disruptors, so if we’re buying into the idea the party you throw your child is an emblem of you as a parent, then I’d suggest a different tact. Throw good taste and better branding out of the window, and invite a load of celebrity brats to mainline e-numbers, play with fake guns, scream at each other and pass out in front of a massive cinema screen showing.
