People in the UK already munch their way through more than four billion loaves of bread a year - but the kitchen cupboard staple could disappear from supermarket shelves.

A group of experts have warned that the beloved bread loaf could disappear from homes in the UK due to climate change.

Lead author of the study, Professor Erin Coughlan de Perez, said: "The historical record is no longer a good representation of what we can expect for the future. To conduct this research, the experts collated seasonal forecasts from the last 40 years and then created thousands of possible outcomes that could occur across the world.

"But our research showed possible alternative realities of today's climate that generated 15 days above this threshold, which we surmise would be very damaging." Due to the unpredictability of the weather, regions across the world have been lucky in recent years, as colder weather has been experienced in important areas where crops grow.
