Tuesday's front page: Antibiotics en masse for children in Strep A schools Story from janemerrick23: TomorrowsPapersToday

The highly unusual move would see penicillin or an alternative antibiotic given to all children in a year group that had been hit by a case of the infection even if they did not have symptoms.

Senior health officials said on Monday that lower rates of mixing among children during the pandemic may have contributed to them having reduced immunity to the strep A bacteria. But health officials confirmed the plan was part of guidance for local outbreak control teams, and antibiotics could be given to whole year groups on a case-by-case basis.

The latest deaths to be confirmed were of a 12-year-old boy in year eight at Colfe’s School, Lewisham, and a child at Morelands Primary School in Waterlooville, Hampshire. “We are absolutely devastated by the loss of one of our young pupils and offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the child’s family at this extremely sad time.”more serious invasive Group A streptococcal infectionLouise Bishop, health protection consultant at UKHSA London, said: “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and school community following the sad death of a child who attends Colfe’s School.

“In rare instances, it can cause a serious invasive infection, known as iGAS. Anyone with high fever, severe muscle aches, extreme pain or swelling of the skin, and unexplained vomiting or diarrhoea should call NHS 111 and seek medical help immediately.”
