Campaigners protested outside the Civic Centre in Livingston, calling for reform to the ASN education system

Angry West Lothian parents staged a protest this week demanding more help for children with additional support needs.

Campaigners say there need to be an end to “the presumption for mainstream school” while more specialist schools and support teachers are needed. She continued: “That means although there is a greater need for educational support there aren’t enough teachers to support them. “This has resulted in a lot of ASN children struggling in mainstream school and not being able to cope.

The Scottish Government says the number of school pupils with additional support needs has “increased substantially” since 2010 with spending reaching a record high of £830 million in 2021/22.
