Cleethorpes Beach lost its Blue Flag status last year after nine pollution warnings - what more needs to be done to solve this issue? 💧 Find out in our in-depth piece

Six water companies, including Anglian Water, could be forced to pay compensation to customers over allegations of unreported sewage dumps and overcharging, outlined in a collective legal case against the private firms.

More than 20 million customers of the companies could be due a combined compensation package of around £800 million on an opt-out basis. In response to these legal claims, Anglian Water pointed reporters in the direction of a wider statement made by Water UK, accusing the legal challenge reports of being “entirely without merit.”

Known as storm overflow discharges, water companies can release raw sewage when in danger of exceeding capacity, usually due to high rainfall. North East Lincolnshire Council said of this loss of Blue Flag status that Cleethorpes resort, the second largest estuary in the UK, “can be affected by events happening upstream and sometimes in other major rivers.”Anglian Water, which was actually the second lowest for sewage dumps across all water companies in the country, did acknowledge its role in the national problem and vowed to do better.

The government also drew up a plan last year, asking water companies to reduce their use of storm overflows – requiring £56 billion of capital investment over 25 years and ensuring that no such raw sewage discharges take place by 2050. Last week, Extinction Rebellion Lincolnshire members made their feelings abundantly clear as to who is to blame for the current state of our waterways.
