The toxic Blue-green Algae is present across numerous locations in Northern Ireland
A Co Antrim angling association have called for the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to provide answers on why the toxic Blue-green Algae is continuing to be present in waterways around Lough Neagh despite a recent spell of bad weather.
David Kennedy, Development Officer from the Crumlin and District Angling Association told Belfast Live that our rivers are at "crisis point" and said that questions need to be answered. “The issue of toxic algae has been building now for a number of years now. It cannot, and will not, be sorted out overnight. What we need to tackle this issue in the medium to long term is stronger action on pollution, especially agricultural pollution to reduce the amount of nutrients such as nitrates, phosphates and ammonia entering our waterways.”
“Sinn Féin has been in contact with relevant agencies to see how this can be tackled, including the Environment Agency and DAERA. I have recently spoken to Antrim and Newtownabbey Council officials to raise my concerns. "Algal blooms occur naturally due to the combination of factors such as water temperature, water clarity, sunlight and nutrient availability. However, excess nutrients can compound blooms and lead to the growth of blue-green algae, exacerbated by invasive Zebra mussels leading to clearer water conditions.
