Giolito, a former All-Star with the Chicago White Sox, was acquired by the Angels on July 27 for two of Los Angeles' top prospects.
Since making a slew of moves at the trade deadline to contend for a playoff spot, the Angels have gone 8-18 and fallen to seventh place in the wild-card race.This is a pretty unprecedented move by the Angels. It’s possible that it will get them below the luxury tax, which would be a strong motivation to make moves like this. But this does nothing to help the Angels on the field or in the future. The team took a massive trade deadline risk and it all failed epically.
It certainly shakes up the sport and creates an interesting dynamic in the post-deadline portion of the season. It’s likely that all the players will be of interest. —
