An ambulance service has said people should take their loved ones to hospital themselves, rather than calling 999, as response times soar
North West Ambulance Service said people should only call them if they cannot get people to hospital "by any other means."
One senior ambulance service boss said that "the wheels are coming off", with all ambulance trusts declaring their highest level of alert. Some 100 ambulances were stuck outside hospitals with no way of dropping off patients in need of treatment, as the wards were already too full to take them in. "We know there are patients waiting for our help and we are sorry that we are unable to respond as quickly as we would like. Please be assured that we will get to you as soon as we can."
