Amal Bafaqih was sent images that showed her car marginally over the line of the disabled bay in which she parked
A pensioner said she felt "angry" and ill" after being sent a £100 parking fine for leaving her car "one inch" outside of a bay. Amal Bafaqih, who is 85, received the charge after visiting a retail park on April 5 this year.
But she said her car did not block traffic, nor any other parking bays. She has refused to pay the fine. However, following unsuccessful appeals, the fine has now increased to £170, but Amal has vowed to fight it in court. Such penalties in regards to private land are generally civil matters, with the 'fine' actually being a notice or invoice, rather than a fixed penalty such as those issued by councils for violations on public roads that can be pursued through the criminal courts.
Two days later she received a letter in the post from UK Parking Control that said she had been charged £100, which would be reduced to £60 if she paid it within 14 days. After refusing to pay it and unsuccessfully appealing several times, Amal has received several letters from UK Parking Control and debt recovery agencies.
Asked how she felt when she discovered the fine she said: "[I felt] angry, ill, sick, disappointed. Because there is no reason for this nonsense. I'm too old to fight back - I'm 85, I'm not young anymore. 85, sick, I'm diabetic, I have Crohn's - I have too many things, too many disabilities. [I have] arthritis. I feel anger, and I have very high blood pressure."
