Just this week, another bakery has shuttered its doors for good
Earlier this week it was reported that a popular family which has been trading since before the Second World War would be closing its doors for good because of the 'devastating' impact of a cycle lane.
Below, we’ve taken a look at the Manchester cafes and bakeries which have shuttered for good this year to date.At the end of January, city centre favourite Cafe Metro closed down for good after 25 years. Owner George Stavrinou, who ran the cafe on High Street opposite the Arndale with his son Michael, confirmed the news on Facebook explaining they had come to the end of their lease and the landlords had plans to redevelop the building.
The Bolton Street cafe was a must for sweet-toothed visitors to Ramsbottom, and featured everything from bars of chocolate with edible prints laid over the top, to chocolate pizzas and flavoured chocolate buttons. Regulars were saddened by the news and many posted messages of support, with one writing: "Such sad news devastated for you all. It’s such a lovely cafe always a lovely warm welcome. Good Luck Phil to you and your family xx.
Victims of a "perfect storm" of financial factors, the couple decided they could simply not survive for another summer after mulling on the decision since the pandemic. Having watched as the industry, and indeed the entire bohemian district, changed all around them, they also felt they could no longer keep pace. Paul told the Manchester Evening News: "People now expect something more corporate, people wait to be seated and expect table service, it never used to be like that.
