It is the latest environment-led change that the discount retailer is making in its branches

Aldi has announced a change that will take effect across all of its 990 UK stores. It said it was removing all single-use cutlery from its Food to Go range.

The change, Aldi said, would mean a reduction of 10.5million or 28 tonnes of wooden forks – by encouraging a switch to reusable options instead. It said it would add up to a significant reduction in single-use items. Customers are instead being encouraged to use reusable options as a permanent replacement in a bid to reduce their environmental impact.

Luke Emery, plastics and packaging director at Aldi, said: “At Aldi, we are constantly reviewing ways to become more environmentally friendly and this is another positive change to help us make a difference. This will result in a significant reduction in single-use materials and help customers to make more environmentally friendly choices.”

The move comes following Aldi’s switch to colourless milk caps across all of its UK stores in a bid to further improve the recyclability of the bottles. The rollout will mean a further 200 tonnes of High-Density Polythene in the bottle tops can be reused to create new milk bottles, the chain said.
