Nottingham has previously been found to have the highest level of homelessness in the East Midlands.
People tackling record rough sleeping levels in Nottingham say there is "massive" work to be done amid reports of people being urinated on. Data earlier this year found Nottingham had the highest level of homelessness in the East Midlands, with rough sleeping being the most visible form of the problem.
In the city centre on Wednesday , Nottinghamshire Live counted 16 people sleeping rough in the space of an hour. One of them was a 40-year-old woman who said she had been on the streets for six months after escaping domestic violence. "There has always been a stigma around rough sleeping, there are so many people who say it's their own fault and they're just druggies or alcoholics. But that has often come after, because it's their way of coping with sleeping rough on the streets."
"We've seen people still sleep on the floor. They've gone from the hustle and bustle of the streets, all that noise and the homeless community that do look out for each other, to their own four walls." But it is such services which Mr Redfern says are a "drop in the ocean" compared to what is needed. He said: "I think we've got a government that is in such turmoil, it doesn't really know what to do about anything. There are all these problems all over the place and it's like a rabbit in the headlights.
"There is a dearth of housing, so you've got a fundamental cause there, but you've also got factors like organised crime. You've got to make sure drug treatment is working, you've got to make sure mental health is working, you've got to make sure the police are on board."
