Police warn drivers the closure in West Yorkshire could remain in place late into the evening.
Part the A1 in West Yorkshire is to remain closed until "late evening" - more than 12 hours after a tanker overturned, police have said.
Drivers are urged to avoid the stretch from junctions 40 to 42 as "complex recovery and specialist clean-up work" takes place.The tanker driver was taken to hospital after the crash on the southbound carriageway at about 07:40 GMT.A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "An HGV collided with the central reservation before coming to rest on its side across both carriageways.
"Due to the nature of the incident, it is likely that the closure will be in place until the late evening." National Highways traffic officers, West Yorkshire Police and fire and rescue services remained at the scene, they added. Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible, allow extra time for their journeys, particularly with roadworks also taking place on the M1 and M62 near Lofthouse Interchange, and follow the clearly-signed diversions.
