A young detective is the new queen of crime in ITV's Karen Pirie Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
, that job is reopening the cold case of the murder of a teenage barmaid, Rosie Duff, found strangled and mutilated in the grounds of St Andrew’s Cathedral. The flashback opening introduces us to Rosie and the main suspects: three university students who discovered her body and are definitely covering for something or someone.
The relative youth of Pirie compared both to her colleagues and to other TV detectives is part of what makes this feel fresh. She is not plagued by a dark past but rather a capable young woman keen to prove herself and terminally underestimated. Lyle is not a complete unknown – she is best known for– but this is surely a star-making turn. Her Pirie is gutsy, empathetic, wry, no-nonsense and utterly convincing.
There is also space for levity and Kenny’s naturalistic script offers up believable moments of humour that never feel forced or ill-judged. This is particularly the case regarding the true-crime element, which winks at podcasting tropes whilst acknowledging what a wide reach can achieve .
