The August bank holiday has always been a point of contention in my social calendar. Festival season is in full swing, there are birthdays galore , and there’s always the possibility of a last minute summer holiday. But my most favourite event of all?Notting Hill Carnival’s Cultural Leaders Share Their Greatest Memories Of The Festival Through The Years
The annual fete has taken place on the streets of Ladbroke Grove for the past five decades, and each year it’s become bigger and better, with countless more stalls and stages and sponsors. 2023’s edition is set to be even more special, marking the 75th anniversary of the Windrush arrival and the 50th anniversary of the introduction of mas bands and sound systems at carnival.
For many Caribbean Londoners, though, carnival season begins way before the bank holiday weekend. In fact, if you, like me, participate in the annual Panorama Steel Band Competition, you’ve been in carnival mode since June. Food vendors have been perfecting their menus and ordering their stock, and the mas bands have spent the whole year designing and creating intricate costumes for the parade.
