Nottinghamshire Live spent the day following one patient through the new scheme at Nottingham City Hospital.
A leading Nottingham surgeon says a new system which discharges some patients on the same day as their operation could bring down a waiting list of more than 1,000 people. Nottinghamshire Live recently spent the day at Nottingham City Hospital to follow the journey of one patient, who was admitted for a full knee replacement in the morning and who managed to leave the site by the early evening.
But in terms of his knees, Mr Curtis said before his operation that the condition of them was becoming "embarrassing" when he was at work. Mr Curtis is the managing director of Skyminers, an industrial cleaning company which works all over the country and internationally on the maintenance of industrial ovens, machinery and chimneys.
Ben Bloch, a consultant hip and knee surgeon, who is the Head of Service for Elective Orthopaedics at NUH, said the new pathway was already having benefits. Since it was introduced, the median length of stay after a joint replacement has reduced from four days to just one. Having been placed on sedatives ahead of the operation, Mr Curtis eventually came round just after 10am. As he began to wake up, he said: "Well I didn't feel anything. I've had a nice sleep for the first time in ages."
