As grading returned to pre-pandemic levels ...
Exam results have dropped to 2019 levels after exams were reintroduced and teacher assessments scrapped
The drop in grades comes as normal exams were brought back for the first time since COVID-19 this year. Exam boards also ditched teacher assessments – originally brought in during the pandemic – and its all had an impact on pupils exam results. Figures show that 19,000 teenagers have been rejected from their top choice of university and will have to go throughHeadteachers have spoken out about the results, saying they were alarmed to see that marking was even more stringent than during the last set of A-level exams taken before the pandemic.Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told pupils that, despite this, they should be proud of what they have achieved.
Education secretary Gillian Keegan urged worried pupils that their exam results would be forgotten about in time.'They won’t ask you anything about your A-level grades in 10 years’ time. They will ask you about other things you have done since then: what you have done in the work place, what you did at university.Pre-pandemic levels
The reason for the move is to address grade inflation, which occurred during the pandemic when exams were scrapped and results were based on teacher assessments. This year’s results are part of a 2-year process. The exams taken in summer 2022 were graded midway between those of 2019 and the teacher-assessed versions in 2021. The return to 2019 results this summer will be the final part of that process.
