Damien Hinds says that minimum staffing levels for a safe regime were met
In the past year, staffing has only reached higher than 64 per cent in one month – in December 2022 – and that was because fewer staff were required on shift for New Year’s Eve.
Justice Minister Damian Hinds said on that day 1,594 prisoners were held at HMP Wandsworth and 125 Band 3 Prison Officers attended their shift. And he pointed out that all staff in the kitchen, where Khalife had been working at the time of his escape, and the gatehouse were on duty.
