‘Madness’ at cost of of bulk waste collection as one Pendle household ‘books 60 bin visits’
A household which booked 60 free bulk waste collections from Pendle Council appears to illustrate a ‘mad’ and costly situation regarding free services which needs to be reviewed, councillors have heard.
Councils are required to carry out regular, standard bin collections. But they have some flexibility on other services, such as offering free or paid-for bulky home waste collections or limiting the number of free collections for each household per year, “There is one household which has booked 60 bulk waste collections. That seems like more than one a week. That’s mad. How much is that costing the council? We have to look at things like this. Are these types of services just benefiting a few individual households rather than bringing environmental benefits?”
He also criticised what he said were Conservative plans to cut area committee budgets. These were cuts, not savings, he claimed. He added: “I want to see you make real savings. Doing the same job at less cost. ” But Coun Whipp said decision-making was ultimately based on the political views of councillors. Councillors should take responsibility for their decisions, he said. Conservative Coun David Cockburn-Price welcomed the fees and charges policy report by officers. He said: “Some of our services are really valued, such as waste collections and cemetery services. This is about putting a bit of rigour into the process. We know some services are free and for some we have got other options.
