5 things to know about Issey Miyake’s geometric AW23 collection:
An Issey Miyake collection is synonymous with a rigorous level of geometric investigation, and for autumn/winter 2023, head designer Satoshi Kondo was fascinated by the dimensions of a square. “We're surrounded by them,” Kondo explained in a preview from Tokyo on Zoom. “The paper we use, the screens we look at… we worked with the square, investigating it in various ways, to transform it into new shapes and volumes.
He then held an up identical version, but with the paper traced with origami folds to “break the rigidity of the square”. This idea was translated into transformative sections of horizontal and vertical knit which bisected architectural and asymmetric recycled polyester dresses. “The knit is like a self-generating form which works with a push and pull angle to create a new silhouette,” Kondo explained.One of the joys of a live Issey Miyake fashion show is its performative element.
