The spectacular display was often a highlight of the festival for the thousands who attend over the Bonfire Night weekend

A stunning fireworks display above the city of Lancaster will not go ahead for 2023. The colourful display is usually the finale of the Light Up Lancaster arts festival, with thousands packing into the historic city to see the fireworks shoot and whizz above rooftops and the famous hilltop castle.

Council bosses have blamed the whopping £35,000 costs of putting on the 17-minute display, which they say is "difficult to justify" in the current economic and also environmental climate.Light Up Lancaster sees art and light installations illuminate the city's streets, squares, landmarks and public event spaces, while there will also be performances of music and dance. The 2023 instalment will take place from November 2 to 4.

It is an illuminated 15th century document which has been referred to as the Duchy of Lancaster equivalent of the Domesday Book. The full schedule is set to be revealed, but Market Square and Dalton Square will once again be brought to life was focal points for the festival. Councillor Catherine Potter, cabinet member with responsibility for tourism, explained the omission of the fireworks display, which is expected to be a disappointing blow for visitors.
