The stigma of HIV isn’t going away anytime soon in the UK with three in four Brits living with the virus still experiencing discrimination or stigma.
Despite all this, public perception hasn’t quite caught up, however. THT found three quarters of people living with HIV think the public doesn’t know the difference between HIV and AIDS.
HIV and AIDS are two very different things. HIV is a wily virus that slips into white blood cells and tricks them into making copies of it,Over time, people’s immune systems try to hunt down these infected cells, weakening the body in the process – the number of potentially life-threatening infections and illnesses that can follow is what is called AIDS.Ian Green, CEO of THT, said: ‘It’s extremely saddening to hear that stigma remains a big issue for people living with HIV in the UK.
‘It’s clear that poor knowledge and outdated beliefs on the virus are continuing to fuel stigma because if people knew the truth about HIV, they’d know there’s no reason to discriminate against me or anyone else living with the virus.’Matthew Hodson, the executive director of HIV education platform NAM aidsmap and himself living with the virus, knows this feeling well.
‘Stigma remains a large part of the lives of people living with HIV,’ he says, adding that stamping this out is easier said than done.
