But the history of women's football in Britain is a contentious one to say the least.
In 1921, The FA banned the women’s game from being played at the professional grounds and pitches of clubs affiliated to The FA, stating:"The game of football is quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged."was side-lined to being played in public parks for nearly half-a-century. But in recent years, the popularity of women's football has continued to grow, with the current crop of superstars indebted to female players of earlier generations.on the Manchester Corninthians and the Nomads, women's teams who continued to play despite the obstacles put in their way. To celebrate the achievements of the Lionesses' success on the pitch, we've put together a gallery showing some of the pioneers of women's football from Greater Manchester. It's their attitude and commitment to the game that has inspired future generations of women footballers. And who knows, we could be about to witness the first English team to lift a FIFA World Cup trophy since 1966.
