The PGA Tour board ratified a number of significant changes to the 2024 schedule. Changes include reduced fields and the removal of the 36-hole cut in new designated events, Rory McIlroy and Max Homa confirmed Wednesday.

Yes, reducing the fields for designated events and making them no-cut tournaments does feel a lot like the old WGCs, which never caught on. But those were often at nondescript courses in far-flung locales, a key difference between that and this PGA Tour evolution. —If you’re not among the top 70 to 78 players on the PGA Tour at that moment, you’re not going to get into these events. Which stinks.
Who this will hurt the most are the PGA Tour events that will never see Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa all show up at the same place on the same week. If you’re a fan of golf in Detroit, Minneapolis, Jackson, Mississippi, or Silvis, Illinois, the handful of top-50 players you hoped to see every year at your local Tour stop may now be one or two. Or zero. And that’ll have a downstream effect — including on local charities that benefit from the PGA Tour event.
McIlroy pointed out that winning a non-designated event gets you into future designated events, so it’s not a closed system. “Top guys versus the hot guys,” as McIlroy put it. Max Homa provided a different perspective from most of the rest of the top 20 in that he has lost his PGA Tour card, so if anyone would be the voice of No. 109 on the points list, it figured to be him. But he was on board, claiming that some events have too big of fields anyways and end up letting in also-rans and has-beens and that it’d be easier to win a Honda Classic if you know Rahm is not showing up.
