The £1.14 billion devolution proposals for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire have reached a milestone as they become law, granting local leaders significant powers in transport, planning, and education. The plans include the appointment of an East Midlands Mayor, to be elected in May next year, when the new authority is set to come into effect.
Plans to give Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire more independence have reached a "milestone" moment as the £1.14 billion proposals become law. A new authority will see local leaders being given huge powers across transport, planning and education that are currently held by central government.
But the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill has now been granted royal assent, meaning it has completed its passage through Parliament. Leaders say this now means that the devolution plans are "definitely happening", though the four councils that originally signed the deal still have to formally approve moving forward. The decision on this from Derbyshire County Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, Derby City Council and Nottingham City Council is due by the end of the year.
